Swimming with dolphins in the Azores – example itinerary

Day 1: Arrival. Transfer from the airport to your accommodation where you can settle in and get to know the local area. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax and enjoy a light supper at the hotel or a local restaurant from chosen from our restaurant guide which you will receive in the welcome pack.
Day 2: Breakfast and a relaxed morning. You can then make your way to our whale watching base ( 20 minute walk )where your boat trip schedule can be discussed and you can meet the team. Be sure to visit the Botanical garden Jose do Canto close to the hotel if you have time. BELOW IS A SAMPLE ITINERARY which you can add to with sea or land based tours as you choose: you will be given your own personal schedule and you can pre reserve land tours and land activities in addition to your trips to sea. In the afternoon you can book an optional dolphin and whale watching trips to sea to get your sea legs before starting your dolphin swim program tomorrow.
Day 3: After breakfast, make your way to the base. The dolphin swim guides will greet you and discuss your swimming and snorkelling competence and you will be free to practice if you wish in the protected bay near the boat base. You will be introduced to the safety briefing and ethical protocol for boat approaches when swimming in the open sea with dolphins. There is an audio-visual briefing about the whales and dolphins of the Azores, with lots of instruction on how to best swim with wild dolphins. You will also practice getting off the boat into the open sea and climbing back on again using the ladder. It is important you know how to use your equipment and feel comfortable and confident. Your first day is all about preparation and safety. If the group is confident in the water there may be the opportunity to enter the water with the dolphins or enjoy watching them ride in the bow wave of the boat. You can take your time and only get in the water when you feel ready and the dolphins are around the boats.
Day 4: Breakfast. Morning boat trip 2 – Swimming with dolphins. As you are now feeling well prepared you can enjoy this thrilling activity in a relaxed way watching the dolphins pass by underwater. The afternoon can be spent relaxing by the hotel pool or taking a jeep tour to visit the lakes or kayaking, paddle boarding or mountain biking at our lakeside activity centre.
Day 5: Breakfast. Morning boat trip 3- Swimming with Dolphins activity. By now you will feel like a pro on the boats and swimming in the open sea with the dolphins with others in your group. Optional afternoon Jeep tour of the Island to see the geo thermal activity and bathe in the hot thermal waterfalls, do some wine tasting at the vineyards or visit the tea plantation ( The Azores is the only place in Europe that grows tea )
Day 6: Breakfast. Optional day excursion to Furnas to enjoy the geo thermal craters and geysers – see the steam rising from the rocks and sample the local cuisine cooked underground. Visit to the famous botanical gardens in Furnas created 100 years ago by the gardeners of Kew. Within the Garden there is a hot thermal lake ( so take your bathing suit ! )
Day 7: Breakfast. Final day you may like to take another dolphin and whale trip to sea. Afternoon – Visit to the Vigia, the lookout who can spot the whales from 30 km, try your own spotting skills! Nature walks, exploring the wildlife inland, or free time by the pool relaxing. Completion of holiday!
